The second is a beautifully made Ron Gilbert platformer with a touch of the point and click age to it. The first has a visual style which is pleasingly Dreamcast - like sharp edges and bright blue skies, is challenging in places and yet also refreshingly underuses what it gives you- so it creates a giant area for what is quite a small puzzle in the end which gives it a distinct feeling from many other games. I feel that many post PS2 era 3D platformers (and even some on the PS2) were no longer as fun as some on the PS1. Like sure, PS1/N64 era 3D platformers were often clunky but they had something and left some good memories. ^I truly wonder if older generations were better and its just not that we are blinded by nostalgia. All requiring some dedication but offering very rewarding progression. Like Shadow of the Colossus, Heart of Darkness, Godhand, Dark Souls (and Bloodborne) etc. I had a few slow years with nothing but online shooters and started getting less and less interested about games until I found games that got me passionate again. Wrapping it in DLC and Season Passes and expecting people to not get jaded!Īnd I think thats because games are often much less engaging or (less) harder than some of the older games, and that now instead of the joy of having something rewarding within the game itself, devs try to throw us treat biscuits in a form of trophies/achivements for performing grindy, systemic or even near impossible tasks. They are shovelling out expensive half finished crap. Maybe Morpheus or HoloLens will spark passion again as the potential for doing different things is huge.Īlso, I think Publishers are not helping the industry. Titles like Journey, ICO or Kerbal Space Program for example. This is why in the last few years I have moved more toward smaller / Indie games because they still spark some excitement and are willing to do different things. Since the PS2 / XBox, it seems we have been seeing more and more refinement every generation, but little that is truly radical or new in the big budget titles. Analogue controllers! They brought genres and experiences we had never seen before. The monumental leap to CD's and 3D games. I think a large part of that was due to each console generation bringing something radically different. There was a genuine enthusiasm and excitement. No one whined about 'Should we be worried about game X', or 'Is game Y overhyped'. I remember when I was growing up there was only excitement for new game announcements. Yooka-Laylee is a good looking start at least. There are some new games i am quite fond of, they just seem to be missing something. Even though the graphics might be a bit outdated, that addictive gameplay and magic is still there and alive! Thats how i know its the game and not the person. Im finding myself going back to 90s consoles like the Dreamcast and replaying games to spark up some of that passion ive been missing. There is still passion there, its just up to the developer to reignite that spark!

Its become all about graphics, wasteful repetitive sidequests and greedy dlc. The developers have become lazy and have forgotten that magic spark that made playing a game so much damn fun. Majority of games these days require us all to do the same kinda thing mostly, run, cover and shoot in the same looking place. I have lived thru many years of gaming and have to say that there was much more creativity, variety and art going into a game back then, compared to now.
